Al-Juhfa is a large village located northwest of Makkah. It was named al-Juhfa because floodwaters swept away [ijtaḥafa] its inhabitants. Al-Juhfa includes a mosque of the Prophet, and it is also the Miqät (lhram station) for prospective pilgrims from Egypt, the Levant, and the Maghrib. 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas said: "The Prophet (PBUH) designated Dhu'l-Hulayfa as the Miqat for the people of Madina, al- Juhfa for the people of the Levant, Qarn al-Manazil for the people of Najd, and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. These are their respective stations for Ihram, and for those who pass through these places from other regions to perform the hajj and umrah. For those who live closer to Makkah than these places, they assume Ihram from where they are, including the people of Makkah, who do so from Makkah itself."
