Masjid Al-Rayah is a historical mosque where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had prayed. Historian Taqi Al-Din Al-Fasi has mentioned that Abdullah bin Abbas bin Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas originally built the mosque. It was later rebuilt by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Musta’sim in 640 AH and then again in 801 AH by Prince Qutulbek Al-Hussami Al-Munhali. During the reign of King Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz (may God have mercy on him), the mosque underwent new construction. Masjid Al-Rayah, previously situated in the area now called Al-Jawdriyah and near the well of Jubayr ibn Mut’im, was located opposite the Jaffali Buildings. The mosque was removed in Rabi' Al-Awwal 1431 AH to allow for the northern expansion of the courtyards of the Sacred Mosque.
