Located to the west of the Grand Mosque, on the old road between Makkah and Jeddah, this is a well near the tree where the Prophet pledged with the Muslims the Pledge of Ridwan. The Treaty of al-Hudaybiyya, a well-known peace agreement between the Prophet and the Quraysh unbelievers, was concluded here in 627 CE. After the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyya, Allah revealed Sūrat al-Fath. Regarding those who were present at the conclusion of this treaty, Jabir bin ʿAbd Allāh recalled: “On the day of al-Hudaybiyya, we were one thousand and four hundred. The Prophet said to us: ‘You are the best people on earth today.’” God Almighty praised them in the Qurʾān: “Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allāh. The hand of Allāh is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to his own detriment, and he who fulfills that which he has promised Allāh—He will give him a great reward2 [Sūrat al-Fath: verse 10]. Today, al-Hudaybiyya is a flourishing town known as al-Shumaysi.
